Making up to 1-1/2 quarts of ice cream, gelato, frozen yogurt, sorbet, or frozen drinks at home takes only 20 to 30 minutes with this appliance, and salt and ice are not needed. After the machine's chilling chamber has been in the freezer for about nine hours, the liquid between its walls is thoroughly frozen. The paddle then goes into the chamber attached to the power head. The transparent cover is locked in place, and the machine is turned on. Ingredients go into the chamber through an opening in the cover as the paddle turns. The chamber chills the ingredients to whatever consistency is desired--though dense treats are hard to make because the paddle churns in air.
Chocolate chips, chopped fruit, nuts, and other special ingredients can be added toward the end. Storing the chamber in the freezer ensures a frozen confection is only 20 to 30 minutes away when the mood strikes. The machine measures 8 inches in diameter and 8 inches high. We purchased our DeLonghi after sampling ice cream made from my Sister-In-Law's Cuisnart machine. Nice fresh ice cream unlike the old days where you had to manually crank a handle...and the results were mixed at best.
Comparing the DeLonghi to the Cuisnart....the DeLonghi is much quiter. And that is a big plus when you have visitors who you don't want to be disturbed and want to entertain. Also the texture of the ice cream is better.
Replying to another customer review appearing for this machine...it DOES make treats with milk and skim milk. All without all the preservatives you will find in over the counter frozen treats from stores. ...
Our first batch didn't turn out great...but it was related to not being familar with our new machine. Ever since...success.
The secret to making a firm treat is to mix your ingredients beforehand and freeze/refrig before adding to the ice cream maker. Add it to the machine and let it work away. Then if you prefer a firmer treat, freeze further for a few hours to overnight.
Another suggestion is to buy the Ben and Jerry ice cream guide. It also states the innovation which I just mentioned above...and gives you many other helpful tips which will solve any issues you might encounter.

This ice cream maker is easy to put together and easy to use. It is really quiet too!
My first batch of ice cream didn't come out too good because I did not allow the melted choclate to cool enough before adding it to the other ingredients. The best thing to do is prepare your mixture in advance and let it sit overnight.
I look forward to trying all sorts of recipes with this ice cream maker, its great. I just need to find out from the company if I can purchase another freezer container - so I can use the ice cream maker every day in the summer.
